Does not mean he‘s stuck up or anti-social as he‘s been called other times in his life. One thing you‘ll notice about Rhys upon first meeting him is his cochlear implants. He tries to hide them with his hair but isn‘t very successful. He‘s not ashamed of his cochlear implants, he‘s adjusted to them well, but he doesn‘t want people judging him by them either. He also doesn‘t shy away from the topic if you were to ask him about them. He knows they are apart of him now. So yes, he is a naturally quiet person but that‘s because his “world“ is sort of silent in a way. It doesn‘t take him long to warm up to new people though. If he likes you, you‘ll know it and if he doesn‘t, you‘ll know that as well. He‘s very witty and as a comeback for everything. He enjoys a good laugh, not necessarily at someone else‘s expense. He‘s never out to hurt anyone‘s feelings. He hates it if you try to treat him as an invalid or disabled person. Just because he was born with significant hearing lost doesn’t make him any less of a person. He’s mastered reading lips and understands sign language very well but he’s improved leap and bounds after his surgery to have his implants put in. No it doesn’t cure his hearing loss but he is able to pick up sounds through his cochlear implants that he can interpret as words or sounds from the environment. Rhys is not an angry person but when he’s mad or upset, he tends to shut people out. If you piss him off he won’t want anything to do with you until he’s calmed down. He’s been known to turn off his cochlear implants when he gets tired of sound and wants to dwell in the silence for a while. Sometimes he tends to put others before himself and totally puts himself last. Sometimes people walk all over him, and he lets them from time to time. Rhys as also been known to shoulder the blame for others. If a friend gets into trouble, Rhys is willing to take the heat depending on how close he is to the friend. He’s a sweetheart and it isn‘t hard to love him. His father is unknown to this day. Rhys‘s birth mom decided early on in her pregnancy that once Rhys was born, she would be giving him up for adoption. She knew there was no end in sight for her addiction and she couldn‘t afford a child. After his birth, Rhys spent time in the hospital being weaned of drugs before he was turned over to the local orphanage. Almost a year later, Rhys was the product of an international adoption. His adoptive parents visited the orphanage while on a trip to Japan, and fell in love with Rhys right away. They are of Japanese background, but left Japan years prior to settle down in the United States, in California. Once his adoption became finalized, Rhys joined his new parents in California. It was shortly after he was home and situated that they noticed something “off” about Rhys. Ren, his adoptive mom, noticed how Rhys barely reacted to sounds. She would call his name, but Rhys wouldn’t respond, at first she thought he was ignoring her. She started doing her own tests by clapping or snapping her fingers next to his head, but Rhys would never turn his head or bat an eye. This concerned Ren and she brought it up to her husband, Kaede. They decided to take him to the doctor to get hearing tests done. It was as suspected, Rhys suffered from hearing loss. Ren and Kaede were devastated but were willing to do whatever they had to to help Rhys adjust. When Rhys was old enough to attend school, he attended a school for the hearing impaired. He learned sign language and also mastered reading lips. Even Kaede and Ren took classes to learn sign language to communicate with Rhys. Aside from the hearing lost, Rhys was an exceptional student and made high marks. When Rhys turned twelve, he got a great opportunity. Rhys was offered the chance to receive Cochlear Implants. Thinking it would really open up their quiet son and give him better opportunities, Kaede and Ren agreed to have the surgery down. Rhys received Cochlear Implants at the age of twelve. Now he’s able to listen to music and he talks more now and can have a conversation, thanks to his Cochlear device. Upon entering high school, Rhys received a scholarship to attend Chishiki Academy. His parents saw it as a wonderful opportunity to move back to Japan and expose Rhys to more of his culture and to immerse Rhys in with “regular“ kids. It didn’t hurt that it was a good school. Now Rhys is a freshman at Chishiki Academy and is trying to adjust to the huge mainstream school.
