The only thing keeping him alive is his father's will. His father claims to want him around, so Naoya stays alive if only to make him happy. Because, in the end, that's what he's supposed to do, right? Make people happy with his pain?
He wishes he could have kept the name Muga. It makes sense. It means 'nothing' or 'none' - and he is nothing and he has no value. Naoya means to 'mend', 'reform', or 'improve' - but he doesn't feel like he's been mending or improving at all.
He doesn't know how to love. He doesn't understand it or place any value in it.
He's tried to commit suicide six times. Five of them were through cutting, while the sixth was through starvation. The first attempt occurred when he was ten - he tried to commit double suicide with his younger twin brother Rin. Rin died, but he did not. At the age of twelve, he tried to starve himself to death because he had no other means to kill himself with - Daisuke wouldn't allow anything near him that would give him the chance to. The third, fourth, and fifth time occurred after he turned thirteen but before he turned fourteen - this was the time when he was bouncing from orphanage to orphanage, when no one wanted him. The sixth time happened about a month after moving in with Uchida - he didn't want to be a bother anymore to a father who didn't want him. After seeing his father's reaction, which confused him, he's managed to hold onto life for this long. Each day is a fight to not try to take his life again, to not cut too deep this time.
