If he had any of them to begin with that is... His earliest memory was of sitting beneath the Hachiko Statue, the bronze memorial being one of Shibuya stations five exits. Even memory of that time is somewhat hazy, having only been three years old at the time. His vocabulary was very limited but he had been able to convey his first name but nothing else. He apparently didn’t know or have a family name. Authorities began searching for any information they could find among missing children reports but were also turned up nothing. The boy by all rights did not exist in Japan. He had no birth certificate, no social security number, nobody recognized him. They could only conclude that he may have been born in secret, kept away from view and eventually just abandoned. With no one there to claim him or any evidence to follow in order to unearth his parents, Kaede was fully registered into an orphanage and given the last name Shibuya. His story had become news worthy. The attention he had attracted had brought in prospective parents and fans who either wanted to give him gifts, donate to the facility of even adopt him. Kaede’s new caretakers denied immediate applications as they wanted to conduct their own assurances of his health and mental stability, a process that took nearly a year and a half before he was deemed fit for adoption. However Kaede, even at such a tender age, was not too keen on the whole affair. Whenever potential couples visited for interviews with him he would do everything in his power to avoid it. He would go into hiding, throw the most horrendous of tantrums to dissuade them or when neither of those things worked, simply be mute until the papers were filled. He was adopted four times, shuffling between homes on account that every chance he got he would do his best to escape. More often than not he would be found sitting beneath the Hachiko statue where had been found or, when he was old enough to know the way, return to the orphanage. Frustrated by his conduct, his would-be family would always sign him over. He was a loner. Scared to connect but still wanting that interaction, a thing that he finally discovered in one of his caretakers who eventually became his ‘mother’ after she herself had had a miscarriage. While he didn’t immediately open up to the woman she had been a more frequent face in his short life, having been there from the very beginning and he became attached to her, so much so that he didn’t runaway when she officially adopted him as her son. Surprisingly though she allowed him to keep his surname upon his request. From toddler to teenager Kaede was generally quiet and reclusive with people his own age until his later teens. He did however become more animated, letting his personality shine through, whenever he went to the Orphanage where his mother worked after school or on weekends to play with the children. It become something that he loved to do and savored the attention and feeling of being wanted whenever he was there. In doing so he began to employ a bit of openness with his peers and eventually made three friends who he has been sure to cherish since – even if one of them instigated one of the most miserable events of his life. While he never told anyone or found reason to mention it, Kaede had figured it out for himself that he wasn’t attracted to women. He looked enough like one as it was and generally just had no romantic feelings for them. Unfortunately, not revealing this to his friends ended up with him celebrating his seventeenth birthday chugging alcohol and ending up in the bed of a girl who had apparently been trying to hook up with him. It was a very awkward situation needless to say and made worse when it was discovered that neither of them had used protection. Any hopes of dodging the baby bullet were dashed come one pregnancy test six weeks later. He didn’t love her, had no intention of bending to fit that role and despite how gently he had tried to put it the mother of his child had still fallen into tears. His parents had offered to pay for the abortion in spite of how financially taxing it would be but the girls parents refused, if anything they were offended by the suggestion. Kaede did what he could though. Even though he was still in high school he had a strong sense of duty and responsibility that drove him to get a part-time job and thus giving what he earned to the expecting mother who dropped out of school before her pregnancy became noticeable. For his valiant efforts a healthy baby boy who was named Akihiko but any joy in the infant’s arrival was torn down by the verdict made by her father that they wanted him to have nothing to do with the child and its mother. They didn’t want him to mess up the boy or for him to know his father was a homo. It had stung but Kaede had been compliant and surrendered any claim to his flesh and blood, a decision that eats away at him constantly. By some miracle he forced himself through college, chasing down a teachers license as he had hoped to do and becoming a kindergarten teacher. It was wrong of him to hope that Akihiko would be enrolled in the school that had employed him. Even worse was the joy when he saw Akihiko when he was three, being led through the halls of the school and then the instant shame, guilt and frustration when it was discovered that he worked there and the boy was whisked away. Even though it burned he didn’t completely give up. When Kaede next saw him Akihiko was seven and by chance he had seen where he went to school. From then on he would occasionally make time, never maintaining too much of a pattern in his visits, but would quietly watch him from afar, leave things for him to find like money or a toy, anything to feel like he was participating in his life.
